i just can't get enough of theses cute kids.  my mini sessions at the studio have been beyond enjoyable for me and the kids are having the best time playing in front of the camera. after the end of most sessions, the kids have been the ones directing me on how to shoot them.  it makes me smile to see that they enjoy this.  i am making these sessions available again in july. this will be the last time before school starts so you may want to put your name on the books now.  space is limited to 20 spots so please email me as soon as you can before they fill up.  session dates are going to be featured tuesday-thursday from the 10th to the 26th.  sessions include 20/30 minutes with me, online hosting, dvd of images for you to print from (15-20).  $250 per session limited to two kids (additional children are $25 each).   email me to book your spot at our heights studio.

i was excited to photograph brad and stacy's baby.  not too long ago they were celebrating their 9 year anniversary and talking about how they wanted to start a family.  it was worth the wait and little nicole is a doll and i can't wait to photograph her first year.

blogging these days has been the last thing on my mind and it's so hard to add it to my list of things to do even though i enjoy creating them.  i also like that you stop by to see what's going on!  seems like my list piles up more during this time of year due to the holiday season but i've got to start somewhere.  back in october i photographed my friend kelly's family.  i love getting to shoot families, especially ones that i get to photograph every year. clothes have been passed down, teeth may have come out, and they love each other more than the last.  it's pure joy.

5x7 Wide Folded Card Front.jpg

when putting together this birth announcement i was inspired by my friend james and how she does her "what we wore" posts.  i thought this would look perfect for a baby birth announcement since you have so much information that you want to share with everyone.  i also wanted to avoid the standard announcements that get lost in the mix  i also incorporated the big's in the card too.  they sure do love their new sister.

Hi Brooke,

Waaw, I absolutely adore your work!
I stumbled upon your website as I was looking for birth announcements.
My little peanut is due next week!
I love the pics that you shot of Eleanor Quinn Wells! so simple but oh so beautiful...
I have a quick question about this birth announcement: How did you do the writing on top of the photo? And was this somehow one card or several cards?
I love to do this announcement for my little one, but not sure how to ..
hopefully you could give me some tips?
Thanks!!

people often ask me what why people would want me to photograph their labor and delivery and usually i  tell them that it is a beautiful event. if you are one of those who can't stomach this life event then i would skip over this post now! :) little did i know that home births were even more reason to photograph your child's birth- it was magical. i was not quite sure what to expect when aaron told me they were having a home birth with a midwife.  i had never photographed one at home so I was not quite sure what to expect.  i can say that so many more emotions occur outside of the sterile hospital walls and it was fun seeing the difference between the two.  i had both of my children in the hospital where i felt safe, both experiences were great but there is something to be said about having your baby in your home with your family.
i arrived after aaron texted me around 2:30 p.m. saying she was "in transistion" which had me  worried i was going to miss it because i had left my phone in the car during a shoot.  turns out she was "in transition" when i got there so things did not come quite as quickly. :) i was happy to be there during this phase and watch rachel move gracefully through each contraction.
the birthing ball ---> moved to the swaying back and forth ---> moved to the shower ---> moved to the floor ---> moved to the chair and you get the point.  rachel was strong and beautiful and gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 6:53 p.m.. little nova was a hefty 9 lb 12 oz and 21 inches long. she is perfect and mom and dad are doing well!

i photograph births because you are only born once. /////// visit their family to see some pre-nova pictures and baby ones too if they get time to blog!

aaron is an amazing videographer at 31 films so he had to grab some shots of nova as she had heart checked. she was so alert and interested in everything going on. blog_tharpe15.jpgblog_tharpe20.jpg
i was even there for novas first bath (it was an herbal bath that the midwives made for them).blog_tharpe16.jpgblog_tharpe18.jpgblog_tharpe_mg_21.jpg

easter weekend was spent out in marfa, texas where we relaxed in the sun and made sure to not let the clock rule our lives.  josh and i have been coming out here for 9 years now and there is a reason we keep coming back.  life just seems to be more real when i am out here in this beautiful country.  the railroad revival tour also brought us out to visit and i enjoyed taking photos for myself. el cosmico was the perfect place for a concert and the entire camp was illuminated by the stars and the stage!  what a perfect easter weekend.

the railroad revival tour featured old crow medicine show, edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros and mumford and sons.

Ruffled blog was quick to grab up Amanda and Bradley's handcrafted DIY wedding.  These two were married  with so many creative details that made there wedding celebration spectacular.  When I met with them back in 2010 we were giddy with what type of wedding they were putting together.  Bradley is a cyclist and Amanda has creative style that was sure to be found throughout the celebration.  I loved their spirits and the whimsy of the day.  Everything was planned out perfectly and most of the items from the wedding were handmade or bought on etsy!  My favorite part was the hand designed invitations that were custom designed by her bridesmaid Chelsea Windlinger.

Everything was beautiful! See the wedding slideshow of our favorites here

last night i woke up gasping for air - i could not sleep without dreaming of sarah and her transition of leaving this earth. my sister called this morning letting me know that she had passed on around 4 am which was about the time of my awaking.  i often contemplate about birth and death and how we enter into this world in a similar manner - it is a process and not always easy but in the end it is beautiful. certainly doubt is their with the unknown but know that comes with faith.  sarah has given me hope in knowing that we need to trust that God is in control and loves us.  one of my favorite photos was taken of sarah just after her reception through the car window. we will miss her greatly.  here are the photos that i took during her last minute wedding and i think it may always remain as the best wedding to date.

a beautiful note from her husband on her blog:

"I think Sarah's light has shown so bright that this earth can no longer contain it.  It's time for her to go to the true source of that light, to stop being the lone lantern shining into the darkness, but to join the grand symphony of radiance.  It would seem selfish to keep her after she has worked so hard and is this close.

Shine bright firefly, shine bright... with tears in our eyes we cherish the path you illuminated."

What a beautiful blog entry. I didn't know Sarah but her story while so tragic is quite peaceful and makes me think about letting go all of the things that really aren't important. And focusing on what is. Thanks for that lesson.

I followed her blog and thought she was an amazing person. Her faithfulness to the Lord was so glorifying to God. Her life touched me and I will never be the same after sharing in her journey. I was so saddened to find out she had passed on but rejoice in the fact that she is in heaven, with Jesus, without any pain.

sometimes it can be difficult to find a venue here in houston that has a unique feel that offers all that you would need for a wedding celebration. rainbow lodge has to be on the top of my list of amazing venues in houston.  not only is it a neat place, the food was spectacular and guests loved the quaint space. located near downtown houston, rainbow lodge throws out a warm vibe with rustic charm. it was really fun to shoot here with such a great couple!

this title is completely true in every sense and i have never seen a wedding in my entire life that was more beautiful (and i go to a lot!).  i heard some really disheartening news last week about my friend sarah.  she found out that a previous bout with cancer (that was gone) has returned   on her lungs. instead of going through chemo with a fiance, she wanted to go through this walk with a husband.  so everyone made a couple of calls and her wedding was planned in less than 24 hours!  i have never seen a community come together so fast to plan a wedding before, but it was amazing!

backing up, sarah contacted me to shoot her wedding in november of this year.  it was going to take place on thanksgiving weekend and i just could not make it happen with my holiday schedule. i of course was disappointed because i wanted to capture that day for her and had been planning on it even before she had a husband in mind!

if anyone has ever planned a wedding, you know all of the details that might take place.  it may take 6 months (at least) to find all the vendors to make it happen.  this wedding was a testament to what it really is and is not about. what took place on sunday was a beautiful act and reminded me that this is the perfect example of what a wedding should be about.  it was all so beautiful and true.  it encourages me to live life day to day and relish every moment as if it was my last.  i am glad that i did get to shoot her wedding after all!

a prayer service is being held tonight at ecclesia for sarah @ 8:00. click here to see more from their beautiful day.

I was one of Sarah Chidgey's students in third grade. ( im now 10) I was in fourth grade when at school, they let everyone know she had passed. It was terrible. The school was falling apart. Passing by, EVERYONE was crying. It didn't matter they knew her or not. Sarah Chidgey just had a spark on everyone. I miss you so much, Ms. Chidgey. Dont ever forget it.

I am often asked at every wedding if I shoot with Digital.  Mainly they are older men who have an old camera and can't get through to letting film go, I don't blame them.  There is something about a hard negative that you can lift up to the light and view an image on.  Josh was the creditor to helping me grow in my passion of photography and so many nights a camera would be in our hands exploring the light.  We fell in love over it and continue to grow in it every day.  I am blessed by what it has brought to my life and how it continues to teach me to find myself or what speaks to me.  Below are some images that I took with our Hasselblad.  To see the image framed in the viewfinder of this camera was the best part of the process for me.

Below is a trip that I took with my mom and late aunt.  We visited a flea market in texas where i practiced my skill.  I will never forget this trip and what it meant to me to go out there and capture life on film. This post is for my Aunt Kathy who taught me to explore the world and love life at ever moment (even the bad times).  Mi mancherai bella.
