i got to spend some time with these two children. their mom owns an amazing bridal boutique and we work together often but rarely get to spend time outside of that. i was happy to document some of their day away from work.

i'm gonna be a total goober and ask what kind of lens you use? i'm in the market for a new one and love your pictures (i'm sure you use a ton, but maybe a go-to lens?)

(01.16.12 @ 09:08 AM)

Hey :)
I wanna ask u what lens do u use? Cuz the photos are really great, and do u edit the photos to look like that or it's the camera setting?
when putting together this birth announcement i was inspired by my friend james and how she does her "what we wore" posts. i thought this would look perfect for a baby birth announcement since you have so much information that you want to share with everyone. i also wanted to avoid the standard announcements that get lost in the mix i also incorporated the big's in the card too. they sure do love their new sister.

BRILLIANT announcement. absolutely adore this entire shoot... simple, original, perfect. love!!!

(11.03.11 @ 10:13 PM)simply adorable!
(11.07.11 @ 06:25 AM)Spotted your announcement on a couple of other blogs! I love your work and I'm glad so many other people do too :)

(11.10.11 @ 02:36 PM)Hi Brooke,
Waaw, I absolutely adore your work!
I stumbled upon your website as I was looking for birth announcements.
My little peanut is due next week!
I love the pics that you shot of Eleanor Quinn Wells! so simple but oh so beautiful...
I have a quick question about this birth announcement: How did you do the writing on top of the photo? And was this somehow one card or several cards?
I love to do this announcement for my little one, but not sure how to ..
hopefully you could give me some tips?
Thanks!!

people often ask me what why people would want me to photograph their labor and delivery and usually i tell them that it is a beautiful event. if you are one of those who can't stomach this life event then i would skip over this post now! :) little did i know that home births were even more reason to photograph your child's birth- it was magical. i was not quite sure what to expect when aaron told me they were having a home birth with a midwife. i had never photographed one at home so I was not quite sure what to expect. i can say that so many more emotions occur outside of the sterile hospital walls and it was fun seeing the difference between the two. i had both of my children in the hospital where i felt safe, both experiences were great but there is something to be said about having your baby in your home with your family.
i arrived after aaron texted me around 2:30 p.m. saying she was "in transistion" which had me worried i was going to miss it because i had left my phone in the car during a shoot. turns out she was "in transition" when i got there so things did not come quite as quickly. :) i was happy to be there during this phase and watch rachel move gracefully through each contraction.
the birthing ball ---> moved to the swaying back and forth ---> moved to the shower ---> moved to the floor ---> moved to the chair and you get the point. rachel was strong and beautiful and gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 6:53 p.m.. little nova was a hefty 9 lb 12 oz and 21 inches long. she is perfect and mom and dad are doing well!
i photograph births because you are only born once. /////// visit their family to see some pre-nova pictures and baby ones too if they get time to blog!

aaron is an amazing videographer at 31 films so he had to grab some shots of nova as she had heart checked. she was so alert and interested in everything going on.

i was even there for novas first bath (it was an herbal bath that the midwives made for them).

Wow these images are gorgeous. Amazing. Breathtaking. What a gift to be able to have these moments captured! Thank you for sharing!!

(10.04.11 @ 09:17 AM)By the way...I've been trying to figure out how to explain the feelings I had when I caught and delivered Nova and handed her to Rachel. It's like nothing I'd ever felt before! Adam pinpointed it exactly in his post though: "Complete awe, joy, and even brokenness. All at the same time." Thanks for translating everything for me Adam :)
(10.04.11 @ 09:20 AM)Great job Brooke! It's was so nice meeting you at the birth. The photo's are amazing! So nice to have treasures of Nova's first moments with us and a glimpse of the emotion surrounding her entrance. She is definitely surrounded with love! Thank you!

i've been hanging in colorado for the last week... (here's a sneak of sweet ivy and her dog)
This is such a beautiful photo. I'm so inspired by all of your photos. SO lovely.
(08.27.11 @ 09:09 PM)This is really something. The scenery is perfect. The little girl and dog make this photo have a comfortable homey feeling. Without them, it could have been just another scenery shot. I just love this, I really could go on and on haha. Great, great work!!

(05.19.10 @ 10:23 AM)here is the birthing story: we spent the weekend relaxing for the most part and managed to squeeze in a date night, block party, brunch and dinner with friends. i was excited most of all to get to spend our friday night at my favorite restaurant where we discussed the arrival of little leon. i felt that labor would come soon as i was having contractions already.
come sunday night i could really feel that they were consistent and moving along, but managed to sleep through them. around 3:45 am i noticed that things were moving along so i was quick to wake josh up and head over to the hospital. we arrived at the hospital at 5:00 am and i was glad to know I was 5 cm along. i labored for a good hour before my dr came in to see the progress and she was happy to announce that i was complete and ready to have this baby! at this moment i recall that i needed DRUGS, although it was my original plan to have a natural birth. of course that was not an option at this point and leon was born at 7:38 am. one fun fact that i have to throw in this story is that the baby nurse for leon was also mine when i was born (30 years ago). i only know that fact because we have a picture of her bathing me.
a special thanks to my best friend katie for grabbing my camera to document this moment. thanks to my dr, damla dryden for your care throughout my pregnancy and delivery. next, i could not have done it without the support of our doula, amanda moore. she was so great in helping me relax through all of that pain. last but not least, my josh...he has been such a supportive husband during the entire nine months, making sure all of my cravings were met and putting up with my emotional self.
i am overjoyed with a son and a second child, as i have learned with stella that time flies by too quickly. i can now see how parents have third and fourth children; i am not saying that i am going to have more (SMILE). stella is enjoying time with her baby brother and she makes the best big sister.
on a business note, i am on maternity leave from may 1 to july 1. this leave does not include the shoots we have scheduled. we will be accepting bookings for 2011 weddings at this time and you can contact us through our contact form on our website or email roxanne. thanks for allowing me to enjoy time with my new family of four.

(02.03.10 @ 11:54 AM)Hi Brooke,
Thank you so much for sharing these photos. Lance and Will are business partners, which I think you knew, but anyhow Lance has been keeping me updated and I ran into Will/Bridgett before Lainey came home, but I hadn't seen any images yet. You just made my day. Way to capture so many moments for them.
My fave is the one on the circular rug - they need that huge!!! After shooting newborn twins, I can only imagine how long it took to get all these!
(02.03.10 @ 07:51 PM)So cute! I have heard about these triplets from Katie, I am so glad I get to see them. Great photos Brooke!
(02.04.10 @ 09:26 AM)Fantastic Photos Brooke! Will and Bridgett are super close friends of mine and I know they are so thankful for the gift you gave them. Thank you!

(02.10.10 @ 05:14 AM)Oh goodness, three?! That is a lot of love there! They are so precious, and your photos are gorgeous!
(02.11.10 @ 09:05 PM)kristin cogan with keely thorne events did a wonderful job coordinating the wedding. wedding flowers were by lisa tran.

one thing that i have little time to do these days is shoot for myself. i find that it is hard to pick up a camera at the end of the day so rarely do i challenge myself to create for me. while away i took my camera out to the horse barn and captured some shots of these beautiful animals. they were eager to pose for me and i may enlarge a few for some art work on our walls (another project that has been put to the side). now the only hard part is picking which ones to print, size of prints and what wall to place them on.
stella, who is four, had lots of fun playing with her little friend and going on fishing trips with dad. she even took on to horse back riding with my dear friend ashley. one goal in 2010 is to pick up my camera for myself!
happy friday.
I'm glad you found time to shoot for yourself. Since it's usually considered "work," we forget how therapeutic photography can be. I hope to see more personal stuff in the future! =)
(01.17.10 @ 08:53 AM)

Just beautiful! I love these -- especially the last ones of Tracy. I can't wait to go through mine tonight!
(10.15.09 @ 02:37 PM)

meet katie and her family. we have been the best of friends for 6 years now. katie is a wonderful mom and is in the business of selling houses and you may have seen her shooting weddings with me on the weekends if you are a bride. their family is very special to me and i have been blessed to capture both births of her girls and now her sweet family of four. their family and my photos have also been seen in the texas children's hospital ad campaign. if you are having a baby at TCH, their face may be familiar! enjoy.

oh unguh. brooke, these pictures are so beautiful and i l.o.v.e katie wells. what a gorgeous family!
(10.09.09 @ 06:15 PM)Precious!! Did you do the first few on the side of a highway? I've always wanted to do that but think ppl would think I'm nuts.
(10.14.09 @ 03:59 PM)
